Kuala Lumpur Workshop (Thaipusam) / (Feb. 9th-13th 2025)
Join my immersive 5-day street photography workshop in Kuala Lumpur during the vibrant Thaipusam festival. This hands-on experience offers a unique opportunity to capture the energy, colors, and emotions of one of Malaysia’s most significant cultural events.
You will learn essential street photography techniques, composition, and storytelling from an experienced photographer, while exploring the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, this workshop will enhance your skills and help you create powerful, authentic images that reflect the spirit of Thaipusam. Don't miss out on this chance to photograph one of the world’s most visually captivating festivals!
Workshop Overview:
In my workshops, I aim to help you elevate your photography skills to the next level. We’ll start by reviewing your portfolio to understand your current level and identify areas for improvement. Together, we’ll determine which aspects can be refined. To address these focus areas, I’ll provide you with tailored assignments to work on throughout the workshop.
„Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity“
You might have heard about this famous quote from the Roman philosopher Seneca and it still is true to street photography. And my goal is that after attending the workshop you find luck everywhere you go. 😉
We’ll discuss gear, and I’ll provide practical tips on camera settings to help you achieve the best results and stay ready for any moment. This includes techniques for achieving fast, accurate focus—an area many street photographers find challenging.
In addition to technical advice, I’ll teach you how to approach strangers on the street and get close to your subjects without being held back by "approach anxiety."
Workshop Schedule:
Sunday
We'll meet at noon to get acquainted and review the workshop schedule. We'll also go over your portfolio to identify key areas to focus on throughout the workshop. In the afternoon, we'll rest and then go out shooting after dinner. The main focus will be the parade in the city center, and later, we'll head to Batu Caves to shoot as long as we can.
Monday (10
Depending on how long we were out shooting the day before, we'll meet in the afternoon to review the pictures and then head out to shoot again at some point.
Tuesday11
This is the main day of Thaipusam, and I highly recommend that we go to Batu Caves before sunrise to capture the best lighting and avoid the crowds. We’ll shoot for a few hours before heading back to rest. Later in the day, we can go out for a relaxed photowalk.
Wednesday
We’ll meet at 10 a.m. to review the photos from the previous day. After lunch, we’ll head out for a photo session.
Thursday
We’ll head out early in the morning to capture the best lighting, then have breakfast and do the image review. The workshop will conclude after lunch, around 2 p.m.
Workshop Requirements:
a basic understanding of photography and the exposure triangle
a camera with manual settings, ideally with a prime lens no longer than 35mm (or equivalent)
I would highly suggest bringing a flash!
shooting film is an option, but reviewing photos the same day may be challenging—your choice
a laptop for photo review (or we can use mine)
a good pair of walking shoes
What is included:
